The Climate Institute
The Climate Institute at Cape May Point Arts and Science Center supports research and education of climate change and its impacts on our coastal ecosystems and communities, and the development of climate solutions.
Our ocean and coastal ecosystems play a critical role in our climate system. They store massive amounts of carbon (often called “blue carbon”); absorb heat; support biodiversity; help to sustain fisheries which support local jobs; and protect coastal communities from rising seas, storm surges, erosion, and flooding. Yet, climate change is already impacting our coastal ecosystems and the health and well-being of coastal communities and economies, underscoring the urgent need for action based on rigorous science; public education and awareness; and the development of solutions that work for people and protect our planet.
The Climate Institute at Cape May Point Arts and Science Center offers a unique opportunity for climate education, scientific research, and a “living lab” for the development of climate solutions.
We are currently building out our programming for the upcoming year. If you are interested in learning more and getting involved, contact us at climate@cmpscience.org.
2025 Climate Summit: Local Action, Global Impact
The Climate Institute at Cape May Point Arts & Science Center is convening an inaugural Climate Summit, June 20th-22nd. We’re bringing together climate scientists, policymakers, practitioners, and community leaders for important conversations on climate science, impacts, and most importantly—solutions! The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited, register today!
Full Agenda and Speakers to be Announced, Event Highlights Include:
Friday, June 20th: Join us for a Welcome Reception to kick off the weekend!
Saturday, June 21st: Join us for an exciting day of presentations and panels on climate science, impacts, and solutions:
Session 1. Climate by the Numbers: Understanding Global Trends and New Jersey’s Realities
This session offers a deep dive into the latest climate science, connecting global patterns with local impacts in New Jersey. Experts will break down key data on temperature rise, precipitation, sea level trends, and extreme weather, highlighting how global climate change is playing out across the Garden State—and what it means for future planning and action.
Session 2. Navigating Change: Responding to Coastal Climate Impacts
Coastal regions are experiencing some of the most immediate and severe effects of climate change—from rising seas and erosion to stronger storms and saltwater intrusion—threatening lives and livelihoods, disrupting coastal ecosystems, causing habitat loss, and impacting wildlife. This session takes a holistic look at coastal climate impacts, and the need for adaptive strategies.
Session 3. Charting the Path: Innovative Climate Policy Solutions for a Livable Future
This session explores policy approaches to climate change at local, state, and national levels. Experts will share model policies and actionable frameworks that balance economic innovation, environmental justice, and political feasibility—offering attendees a roadmap for effective and equitable climate solutions that are good for people and protect our planet.
Session 4. Designing Resilience: Planning and Green Infrastructure Solutions for a Changing Climate
This session delves into the critical role of planning, design, and green infrastructure in building climate-resilient coastal communities. Through case studies and expert insights, participants will explore natural climate solutions, climate-adaptive design strategies, and integrated planning approaches that mitigate risk while enhancing environmental and social outcomes.
Session 5. Power in Place: Community-Driven Solutions to Climate Change
This session highlights the transformative power of local action in addressing climate change. From grassroots initiatives to collaborative resilience planning, speakers will share tools and resources and showcase how communities are leading innovative, inclusive, and culturally grounded climate solutions that foster equity, empowerment, and long-term sustainability.
Sunday, June 22nd: Experience the solutions firsthand with guided local tours of wildlife, conservation sites, and nature-based projects shaping the future of the Cape Islands region. Tour options include:
